Thats exactly what happens when I use wifi tether app.

5 mins of usage, data activity stops.
3 secs later, 3g icon disappears.

So you guys think 3g limits you to about 5 min then craps out Im in Il wright by ohara airport and my 3g sucks wether I tether or not

Happens to all Verizon 3G Android phones (idk about 4G, I'm not there yet haha).

It's something to do with Android handling WiFi and Mobile Data at the same time, long story short here's a fix that should work for you guys:

Settings -> Wireless and Networks -> Wi-Fi Settings -> hit MENU -> Advanced -> set Wi-Fi Sleep Policy to "never" -> MENU then "Save".

I stopped having the problem. After extensive testing I believe it is a certain tower near my office. It may have been fixed, I won't know till more testing.
