data roaming setting

I have the Droid and a co-worker has a Blackberry. There are often times when travelling that he has data access but I don't. We both have VZW. I called VZ but the rep had no answer except to say some devices are different, but she couldn't give me a technical reason. I thought perhaps Blackberrys have some other network access that belonged to RIM or something. Then the other day I found the setting for allowing data roaming but when I enable it I get the ominous message about large roaming fees so I was afraid to try.

Does this sound like the solution, and will I incur any data roaming fees if I am only in the continental US?
