Just rooted but I can't figure out how to get into cwm to make a backup before I flash a custom rom. It is not the same as my DROID x thank you.

Turn the phone off and power it back up using power, volume up, and home all at the same time.

I'm struggling with the difference betwen CWM and goo manager. I used the latter to make a backup and don't have CWM installed on my rooted S4. Does it matter?

U have to flash CWM ... Rooting your phone doesn't install CWM... Flash CWM using Odin...

Got it. But I never flashed it and was able to flash roms with goo manager. Is that the same type of thing as CWM and it's either/or based on your preference?
