Contacts with old emails

I get my new Droid today and it syncs with my google contact list. However, it not only loaded the contacts, but emails that are weeks old, and have been deleted from Gmail.
So, how did it do this?

Does anyone know:

1. How to delete all these old emails without having to do it one-at-a-time.

2. How to keep this from happening again. I have tried everything I know to change settings and/or delete all these old emails (and I mean about a hundred of them) and can't seem to figure this out.

Not a good first day with the X....

Took about two hours, but figured out how to delete all contacts and then sync with GMAIL contacts and it loaded correctly this time. Still do not have any idea over 153 emails from months ago, loaded into the contacts.
