Chomp > Handcent

I've only ever used handcent (I think I downloaded it on the way out of the verizon store, actually), but I love the fact that we have a choice. I think that Google did the right thing there.

I downloaded Chomp a while ago but I wasn't a fan. Granted, I didn't give it much of a chance; and perhaps I would like it more if I really got to playing with it and customized it the way I wanted.

I will say, though, that if Chomp doesn't eat (see what I did there?) random text messages like handcent has done for me (albeit rarely, it has happened; most recently on a message from my mother concerning my pregnant wife) then that fact alone might be enough to make me switch. I will give it an honest try and see which one I truely like better.

Honest opinion after using Chomp for ~2 hours straight:

Decent. Wish it had more conversation styles, but I use the bubbles in Handcent too, so I like them.

Notification vibrations - Prefer the 2 short vibes from Handcent to the one long one in Chomp SMS, And the other options I saw there weren't any better.

Customization - Handcent has a slight edge (in my mind) with the ability to customize to 4 different styles. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of tweaking options available with Chomp, and I like the simpler style of changing colors that chomp has.

Deal breaker (for me) - Chomp SMS is not able to set different LED colors for different contacts like Handcent is. That's a deal breaker. I like to glance at my phone and know if the vibration I just got was a generic text or my wife.

Just my opinions. If Handcent really did get their random message deletion issue fixed (claimed to have done so in the latest update notes) then it wins for me. Chomp SMS is close, but not there yet.

+1 Laramie

No crap, I started playing around with Chomp today and I wasn't overly impressed, but with ads I absolutely can't see why anyone would use it.

Another thing that still bugs me about Handcent is that when you start typing a name and select a contact from your contacts list it replaces the name with the number. Where this REALLY becomes an issue is when the list slowly narrows down so you click a name and it could or could not have narrowed it down as you clicked the name. Unless you know all your numbers (who does these days?) then there's no way to make sure you clicked the correct contact. This is especially annoying when preparing an SMS to send to mulitple people. There's no way to know if you added that contact to the list of recipients if you forgot. Very annoying and if they fixed this and eliminated lost messages entirely it would be the best for me hands down.

soo... what does chomp have that handcent doesnt?

(also, can you set custom message colors for specific contacts in handcent?)

I have been using Chomp for the last month and was getting pretty frustrated with it. It was laggy and FC a lot. About a week ago I downloaded Handcent and am loving it. Time will tell but for me Handcent is way better than Chomp.

Am I the only one that uses SMS Popup? Been using it for months with no issues....
I use it. Only thing that's missing is being able to select foreground apps that will prevent the popup. I keep losing Robo Defense games because my wife is texting me

I have both installed. Had handcent install for awhile now, but I dl chomp to test it out. What I have come up with handcent doesn't pick up all my contacts. If I go type in Wes doesn't pull up his name as contact. When I use chomp can pull his name up. Please explain that? If had to choose one would be handcent.

Is your contact "Wes" a mobile number? Both Handcent and ChompSMS have a setting to only show mobile numbers in its contact list.
