Could I use this prep.zip to run the nightlies from CM7? or does this prep.zip only work with SSX?

This should work for any CM variant - all it is doing pretty much is putting the Froyo radio on. However, it is ONLY needed if you are currently running a non 2.3.340 ROM (ie. liberty). If you are on that - you do not need the prep zip

so i can just flash any CM over SSX and visa versa? without using the prep?

You should be able to, yes - SSX is based off CM - so in a sense they are quite similar

FWIW, I've restored nandroids back and forth between SSX and cm7 with no problems either way
