Cannot see emoticons from non droid phones

I cannot see any emoticons from non droid phones so am wondering what is wrong and what can I do, I am a simple user so please be kind and give me a simple answer
I have a Droid Incredible and am using the default text app

my phone is new, I used to get emoticons daily from my friends and family but now all I get are the symbols and I also get garbage when the emoticons are exotic. Now not only do I not get any emoticons but all I can send are the default green androids that are not nearly as good. How do I fix this and can I fix it without using another text app?

Install Handcent from the market and then installer emoji. Handcent would replace your messaging application so disable notifications in the stock one.

Handcent seams to fix the issue with my seeing Emoticons but now other Android phones do not see the emoticons I send them :blink: I am a little frustrated for I feel there is something I am just unaware of. I feel Google could not possibly have meant for there droid phones to be so limited, so what do I do now???.
Please help me!
