Is it possible to create a widget or some kind of shortcut to bring down the notifications from the status bar? Im having a hard time pulling it down with protective case on and could use a bigger button. Thanks

While you're on the home screen, click the "menu" button and then tap "notifications." I will drop the bar down for you.

Lol....no problem. It's always the basic things we overlook. Also, you can go into "settings" and then click on "applications." At the bottom, it will allow you to double tap home, which will launch you into the application of your choice. You can either do gmail or messaging, therefore you can go into that app by double tapping the home button when you're not on your home screen.
