Can no longer access Market

I cannot log into my gmail account on my Droid anymore (suddenly! no explanation!). I tried going to my laptop to resolve this and signed up for 2-step verification (because it said Droids might need to). The kicker is, now that I'm irrevocably committed to the 2-step process (part way through), the next step to make that work is to go to Market (not possible! which is why I'm trying the 2-step process!) and download an app called Google Authenticator. It seems like a perfect Catch-22. Does anyone know the way out of this conundrum?

I have never heard of this problem. The easiest way to get the app is to go to the market on your computer and get the app there, then it will automatically download to your phone. If for some reason that does not work I would delete the Gmail account on the phone and then put it back in.
