Can my old Verizon smartphone be used by one of my children as just a phone?

I'd like to let my two youngest children use my Eris as a regular phone and only access the Internet when wifi is available. Is this possible?

I've been tossing around the same thought, I just haven't really looked into it.

You can turn off the data through a hidden menu I believe, *#*#4636#*#* but you won't avoid the data access fee. Verizon wont let you activate a smartphone without a data plan.

Also, any phone, activated or not can call 911.. something to be aware of. :)

Is there an app I can install on it so it can send and receive text messages while on wifi? Thanks!

I know there is for apple devices my daughter can txt from her Ipod

Try Pinger Text Free + SMS. My daughter uses it on her ipod, and I tried it on my HTC Thunderbolt, it worked well. It assigns you a phone number.
