Do you use Google as a contacts backup? If so, your contacts are easily accessed from a PC. Goto Google.com from the PC. Log in. You should be able to find the phone contacts. I don't recall the exact location. This a great way to add additional contact info using a full size keyboard.
Go to contacts, click the "..." Button, choose import/export and export to storage. This may back them up to the internal, if that's the case use a file explorer to move them to external. If it saves them to external automatically then you're good.

Great info, Cliff! And for the record, "Export to storage" stored my contacts on the "sdcard1" - which is the external sd card, by default! I verified the file location with a file explorer.
