Calling 911

Has anyone tried calling 911 with GO SMS Dialer, or any non stock dialer?

I just tried twice and nothing happened. By the time I vaguely remembered some problem with that and started searching for my stock application, we had traveled well past the highway roll over and others were responding.

I think I remember an issue with Android where only the stock phone app can call 911. Is this true?

You are correct. Only the stock dialer can reach emergency numbers. If i remember correctly it had something to do with the phone changing to some special emergency setting that only the stock dialer had access too.
