[Breaking] Newest Version of My Verizon Mobile App Looks for Rooted Devices

What really bugs me is that it has the ability to activate the camera and camcorder apps without your knowledge.

I don't want anyone activating my phone's camera, camcorder, or microphone for that matter, except the person holding the phone.

Personally, I'd rather take the chance on my phone being stolen and not recovered than give Big Red (or other hacker) the ability to record audio, take video, or take photos of whatever my phone's multiple cameras are seeing without my knowledge.

Thankfully, the Aroma installer on Alliance ROM gave me the option of not even installing the Big Red Bloat and it's not on my phone.

I totally agree, why would this app possibly need access to the camera. Maybe there is a reason that I'm not thinking of, but it seems real fishy to me. Can anyone give a good reason for this.

I'm sure Verizon will tell you that they need access to your camera in case of theft, so the phone can then take pictures/video of the thief that stole your phone...therefore making it sound like it's a benefit. But in reality it's BULL****. No one wants to think that someone out there could be taking pics and/or video of them at any time without your permission RIGHT AT THAT MOMENT!!! If that's the case, then NEVER leave your phone around you at all when getting dressed (which many of us do, so not to miss a call or message).

I personally think that they are pulling and analysing data from users' devices (i.e. like checking for root status to see who might be using free tethering, or just allowing them a loophole to not offer you tech support whenever they decide that your problems are caused by your rooting your phone instead of doing deeper research into your actual problems).

I'm really interested to see how our hacking/modding Android community fights back, because as I mentioned in my earlier post...this problem is not going away (unless it becomes a government issue related to "spying" on the customer or something). Otherwise, you can expect this same thing to be automatically built in to all of the Kit Kat updates that we'll get as well as come already standard on all new devices!

In my opinion, this is a HUGE deal and really invades on our privacy. I'm curious to see what Dalvic_Cache finds out once he goes behind the scene and picks this app apart.

OR you can choose not to install it, like any other Playstore apps, because you don't like the privileges it asks for.

You think VZW wants naked photos of you? The wacky conspiracy theory of snapping a pic of you tethering is actually more plausible than that.

The camera permissions are for some new in store stuff....So you can scan bar codes into the app.

The simple solution is just uninstall the app. What do you guys need it for that can't be accomplished by visiting a bookmarked webpage for verizonwireless?

Or getting the info via text to the appropriate number such #data (3282) for data and texts,#min (646) for minutes used
