Automatically Scrolls to the Left

So either my Droid Eris is possessed by a ghost or there's something pretty wrong with it... On the home page my Droid will automatically scroll to the left -- even when I have no fingers touching the screen. At first I thought it was my screen protector, but it's still happening even after I took the screen protector off... Can anyone please explain this strange phenomenon?

if by "on a charger" you mean plugged in, then no, it is not plugged in when this happens.

also, i don't think this is a trackball issue because i can scroll to the right using the trackball (although it then automatically scrolls back to the left).

i should also mention that this is an inconsistent problem -- it doesn't always automatically scroll to the left, but it does a lot of the time.

the only other possibility i can think of is that this eris is a replacement from an insurance company -- is it possible they sent me a faulty refurbished phone?

Any solution to the automaticly scrolling left? When I am on the home screen it does this. It makes it impossible to use the phone. I have done anything to the phone as far as updating software to 2.1, though I am thinking about trying to see if it will fix the solution.

What was your fix?

still no fix!!

I have not found a solution yet!! and it still scrolls to the left. I am sorry to hear someone else has this problem. It completely disrupts the functionality of the phone.

I also considered upgrading to 2.1 and wonder if that'll fix the problem.

Can anyone help us?

I had the same exact issue. It would scroll left randomly, and even more frequently when it was on the charger.

I eventually had to take it back for a replacement because it was an issue with the trackball being broken.

EDIT: I didn't have problems with scrolling at first, but eventually I couldn't even scroll to the left with the trackball any more.
I'm quite sure it's the trackball, seeing as I had the same issue. Hopefully it's still under warranty for you..

Yeah, if the trackball sensor is jacked, or there's somehow something inbetween the ball and the sensor, you'll have to replace the phone.

i would try to get a replacement before you try the 2.1 upgrade, just because if it is the trackball or something, verizon might try and blame the problem on the update and not replace the phone for you.

I to have the same problem with my eris.in fact mines is way more servere...ok to start,of course when im on the home screen it automaticlly scrolls to the left. also when im in the app drawer it automaticly scrolls to the very bottom. it scrolls to the bottom for evry list..another thing is that the trackball doesnt always let me got to the left.and when im typing it will sometimes go to the left and erase everything i just typed...as you can imagine it really hard to live with this phone...also i upgrade to the 2.1 but i think that made it worse

Edit: i forgot to mention that it does it more vigurously when it is plugged up through A/C both car charger and house charger

From the HTC Community Website...

The easiest solution:
"UPDATE: So I have spoken to Verizon and they are aware of this issue and will send you a new phone right away. I spoke to them yesterday and will have my replacement tomorrow. It is a "known issue" and can not be fixed with a software update. If anyone is having this problem I encourage you to call Verizon right away and have them send you a replacement. And I suppose cross your fingers and hope the replacement doesn't have the same problem. LOL"

A possible quick fix:
Cleaning the track ball with rubbing alcohol, though it wasn't confirmed whether or not it was successful.

Or, for a definite fix:
"Two options, first one to power it down and remove your SD card and battery. By some canned air and blow air down into the track ball area. This can help if it something like lint or something in that nature. Second one, is to remove the back cover, battery and SD card. Then unscrew the four torxs screw on the four corners of the backside of the phone. It was very small you (like size 2). Then using a flat head screw driver (small one) gently pop the back cover off. This will expose the circuit board that is in control of the track ball. Remove the two phillip head screws that are holding down the board. Lift the board up gently and you will see your track ball and sensor. Remember the orientation on how the track ball assembly sets, before you remove it. Remove the track ball assembly and clean with isopropyl alcohol swabs. Then clean the sensor with a second isopropyl swab stick. The sensor is on the track ball side of the circuit board. Use canned air to blow clean after using the alcohol. After that , put everything back together and your problem will be solved."

I fixed it!!!

after much despair, i have finally found a solution to fix the "scrolls to the left" problem!!

after someone mentioned track ball issues, i remembered back to when a magic mouse (for an apple computer) had a track ball issue -- it was really dirty and cleaning it made me able to scroll again.

so in the same vein, i tried cleaning my track ball and now my eris doesn't scroll to the left anymore!! to clean your track ball simply take a clean piece of paper and roll around the piece of paper over your track ball. this can also be done with some water and a paper towel.

every once in a while my phone will start acting up again but i simply get some paper and reclean the track ball.

hope this helps and let me know how it goes!!
my phone _finally_ works how it's supposed to once again!!

If your phone is still under warranty, I'd recommend getting it replaced. "Cleaning" your trackball may work for now, but it may not work forever... Getting a phone that doesn't have the problem is a better fix in the long-run...

Same Problem, 2nd phone...with upgrade.

I just thought I would chime in. I have the same problem with my Eris scolling to the left and this is my second phone. My first one did it 3 weeks out of the box. So they gave me a brand new one since it was under 30 days. Now 6 months later I have the same problem. However, this time it didn't start happening untal a few weeks AFTER I got the 2.1 upgrade. So I think I can positivily say the upgrade will not fix the problem.
When I first noticed it, it would only happen when I had it plugged into a charger (car nand home both). I got to investigating deeper and found that if I plugged in a charger...even without pluggin the charger into the wall/car....my phone would scroll. So I then notinced that I could and can make it happen on cue my lightly moving the plug around where it plugs inoto the base of the phone. Now this is right under where the track ball is located. This seems to point to either a dirty track ball or a connection issue with the trackball assembly. Either way, I keep my phone in a holster so there is no way I can see to avoid this problem.

Sorry so lengthy bu I just thought I'd share.
