Auto Delete old text messages?

Hi, I tried a search but all I find is info on the original Droid... My question is that on my old DUMN phones and even the Droid you could set the text messages to auto delete once it hit a certain level. Is this not possible on the X? I have read many threads on the net where Android crashes over a certain amount.
Anyone know any settings I can use or will I have to get one of the apps? Reviews are saying they are slow and drain the battery.... any help for a newbie would be appreciated! Thanks!

im pretty sure with handcent you can put a limit on how many in each thread will be kept
