The Associated Press: AT&T wraps $2.35B buy of wireless properties

Not that this is necessarily a huge deal, but if these types of things keep happening, I would think that would greatly increase AT&T's infamous "blue" coverage map in relation to Verizon's. Though, AT&T's towers are different from VZW's are they not (cdma vs gsm?)? Just thought it was interesting... it has definitely seemed like AT&T has been pulling out all the stops they can over the last 6 months in order to bulk up their network.

These were probably the locations that had to be divested after the Alltel merger with VZW. It was overlapping and the FCC said it would be unfair competition so those areas went up for sale. And, yes, the AT&T newly acquired towers would have to be switched from CDMA to GSM. Thankfully for VZW, Alltel was already CDMA, so made it a lot easier to switch over.
