Last month a bug was exposed in the Linux kernel in Android which left all Android devices vulnerable to the "dirty cow" exploit. This exploit allows for the gaining of root access on all Android devices. Apparently the exploit has been around in Linux for the past 9 years. If the dirty cow vuln is exploited it allows the user to have full write access on memory mappings that would otherwise be read only. The bug has been patched by Linux, but was not patched for Android in November's security patch. OEMs have left the vulnerability for now as well. Hopefully this will be patched up on our devices soon. While it is not likely your device will be hacked it would be nice to know the bug had been patched.
