Android 2.2 - Froyo

I would hope 2.2 is on this device when its released though. They say vzw is offering an early upgrade to customers who want to upgrade early for this device on a fathers day special.
How early is Early :)

The forum may want to pick up a few more temporary mods once 2.2 dates are announced. We all know it's going to be a madness....

WAIT! now I'm interested....

Let me watch you freak out. Hold on I'm going to sit down so I can watch.

Ok go ahead........
Actually I wasn't going to freak out right at that moment. I just didn't want to opportunity to freak out - at the appropriate time - forbidden on the forum. :)

Besides, I didn't get all "aughhh" waiting for 2.1, and it's a safe bet I'll patiently wait for 2.2, sitting back and watching others speculate, argue, etc.

what hardware change was that? I would think they wouldn't release the two right after one another. I would think you would release the shadow then at least wait 4- 6 months after to release another better phone. why get the shadow if you could get the droid 2 ya know but hey I guesss they do what they do for a reason

Well, I'm generally inclined to think that huge corporations aren't populated by idiots but I've worked with enough of them to conclude the organizational rationality depends on more than the combined IQ's of the participants.

And I'm beginning to believe that the combination Google, various manufacturers, and various carriers is producing some strange outcomes. Specifically, it's beginning to appear that Google's extremely rapid enhancement process for the Android O/S is throwing the entire release schedules for manufacturers and carriers into disarray.

From the corporate viewpoint (though not necessarily from the consumer viewpoint), there should be some rough coordination of the schedules for o/s releases, incorporation into new devices by manufacturers, and release to consumers by carriers. It seems, however, that Google is creating considerable havoc by moving on a much faster schedule than manufacturers and carriers can match.

At the same time, the uncertainty of manufacturers and carriers about the configuration of devices that consumers want has led to flooding the market with new devices, each with a much shorter shelf life than the previous generation.

This combination results in carriers with who have a difficult time promoting and stocking o/s+device combinations that make any sense. So there's a Droid Eris that has been discontinued by VZW that gets a 2.1 upgrade and a Droid Devour, introduced only three months ago running 1.5. The Incredible which is constrained by production shortages may well have a down rev version of Android compared to the Moto Droid (and definitely compared to the Nexus One.)

All in all, it appears no one is "in charge" here. (Not necessarily a bad thing.) With their own phone and no interference from either the manufacturer or their carriers, Google can pressure the market by releasing 2.2 for the Nexus. Meanwhile, manufacturers like HTC and Motorola struggle to keep up with their proprietary interface requirements on top of the o/s and carriers like Verizon try to figure out how to sell phones in the midst of all this confusion.

I was able to download the 2.1 update directly from Google and install it on my Droid, thanks to the member posted the link and instructions. It worked flawlessly for me. Is this going to be available for 2.2? Anyone got any clues?

Not until it is officially released for the Droid and someone who gets the update pulls the update.zip file for us. There's obviously no way of telling when that will be.

They are 2 different phones:
Shadow - no keyboard, 4.1" screen, 8MP camera, 720P recording, HDMI out
Droid 2 - keyboard, 3.7" Screen, 5MP camera, no HDMI out.

IIRC, both are rumored to come with MotoBlur, but can have MotoBlur disabled easily.

They have similar launch timeframes because they will appeal to different consumers and don't necessarily directly compete with each other.

Wait...if flash is supposed to come with 2.2, as is said in the list of updates, then why did we sign up to be notified to beta test...

change of plans by Adobe?

i bet Adobe didn't anticipate how involved Google would've become with the whole process... overall worked out best for the consumer:icon_ banana:

Flash does not come with 2.2 !!!! Flash support comes with 2.2... google has no rights to flash that is adobe only the beta for flash is out now and the full release will be in june or july..

We need Motorola to release an Android phone with:

4.3"+ screen
Physical keyboard
HDMI out
8MP+ camera
Front facing camera
720p+ recording
1ghz+ CPU
512mb+ RAM
Vanilla Android 2.2 (no Moto Blur please)

Is that too much to ask for?

Edit it wont let me edit: I just looked again and the pic on the leaked droid releasing in july doesn't say shadow on it but everyone is claiming its the shadow but some sites claim that the shadow/droid 2 which ever it really is but it said shadow has motoblur and droid 2 is suppose to have the standard google experience.
There's a whole thread on the topic of the Shadow so I don't want to throw this thread of course already more than it has. In a nutshell it definitely is not the Droid 2 and it very well could be named the Shadow, Xtreme or something else.

Here's the thread:
