Android 2.2 - Froyo

I would assume that 2.2 will be rolled out and sent to all Android devices that are capable of it by Google itself.

There are no issues of compatibility and no new features to worry about with the Droid so this should bypass Verizon entirely.

So now that everyone seems to be loving what 2.2 will offer, if there are no custom roms out yet with 2.2 on it, would you fellow rooted droiders unroot your device to get 2.2? or stay rooted?

Rooted for ONE reason only and that is to OC my Droid. It can run 800Mhz low voltage all day just as it can 550 Mhz standard voltage. Why not get the extra performance?

The issue is that it can't go straight from Google to us. Motorola has to be in there to make sure it works with their drivers, hardware, etc. Then Verizon must test it, they don't let other people decide what goes on their network. Verizon MAY trust Moto with the testing but it still isn't Google -> us.

I don't think its on the N1, yet. Only on the Milestone so far, and that's third party software.

2.2, when released for the Droid should bring bluetooth voice dialing though. I was also right in thinking they would release froyo for the N1 first, so much for rumors about it being dead!

You're right it's the Milestone, not the N1. I just found out yesterday the Milestone had it.

Yeah I wonder what little birdie told ya about the Milestone? :)

Oh no, let's not start with the rooted talk. Seriously guys if you want to make a thread and talk about rooted vs stock 2.2 then be my guest but not in this area. Please.

Yeah I like that Google is adding things that previously required root (apps2sd, wifi tether, JIT, etc) but I will always stay rooted. ROMs always have something that stock won't. Right now those things are themes and overclocking. There are other things also. I can see animated gifs in my browser, can change the User Agent in my browser without going into the debug menu, can change songs using the volume keys when my phone is locked, and more.

Rooting/ROMs will always have more than stock in some way or another. I'd wait longer for 2.2 before I'd unroot.

Man this has me STOKED! I can't wait for Froyo. Almost all of weaknesses I've seen in Android are being addressed.

SD App install? Check.

Better Market with searchable desktop interface and wireless sync? Check.

Update All Option? Check.

Speed increase? Check.

Flash? Check.

Wifi Tethering? Check.

Stronger App management? Check.

Improved Exchange support? Check.

Better Camera App? Check.

The only thing that may make all this frustrating is waiting on it. The last thing that needs to be fixed is the updating process. It stinks that Google creates these awesome updates to improve the power and usability of Android but it's left up to Motorola, HTC, Verizon, AT&T, etc... to get them to us with their little "twist" on them. I really wish that when the final code was available, all the phones could update to it and the various interfaces could be updated later if one chose to do so. Having such fragmentation really is the last weak spot in the Android roadmap. Hopefully they will find a way to fix that.

I keep forgetting u cant edit...

Even on Engadget, they posted about wondering how long carriers were going to look the other way. Like how Verizon did with transferring files by Blue Tooth a few years ago, u can best believe they are gonna tinker with the tethering...

Okay lets be honest......... Motorola will release the update to Verizon, Verizon will take all the good stuff out and "fix the glitches" then send it to the Droids. They will take months to do this all the time telling everyone that it has been sent to testers and that there are still some complications....... Sounds just like the months of BS we were given over the 2.1 update. Y'all don't hold your breath for a quick release of the 2.2 OTA.

I am rooted and will not go back to stock. The 2.1 update messed with my Droid so much. I personally think the custom ROMs will have the 2.2 stuff long before Verizon gets off their a$$ and put the OTA out there. That is what happened with the 2.1.

Just my opinion.
