That would be awesome, then we wouldn't have to wait for VZW to re-tool it to be lame.this. there was a rumor floating around that in order to fix the segregation, that verizon was going to be dropping responsibility for future updates. froyo will be proof one way or the other.IIRC from reading in the forums part of the point of Froyo is to make the Android OS how should I say it, less fragmented? In other words from what I've read that this update is probably the last huge update, and from that point on they are going to drop things in on an "as needed" basis.
But then again I read somewhere about another update with a code name on it already. So I'm not certain.
My point is that I think it's most definitely headed for the N1 and then the Droid.
we're already talking gingerbread here. i'm sure afterwards is probably honeydew.

Would we still be able to get OTA updates then?
not necessarily. google could offer a site that downloads/initiates the package. we've all seen the update.zip. all you need to do is reboot your phone. That would be awesome, then we wouldn't have to wait for VZW to re-tool it to be lame.this. there was a rumor floating around that in order to fix the segregation, that verizon was going to be dropping responsibility for future updates. froyo will be proof one way or the other.

We'd have to. There isn't any desktop software and 95% of the people carrying Droids have no idea what they have or what it's capable of doing.
the sdk always comes out before the actual update. most likely scenario; custom ROMs will be available long before anyone HINTS about an official release. So now that everyone seems to be loving what 2.2 will offer, if there are no custom roms out yet with 2.2 on it, would you fellow rooted droiders unroot your device to get 2.2? or stay rooted?

OK, so not as smooth but likely months earlier, I can live with that.not necessarily. google could offer a site that downloads/initiates the package. we've all seen the update.zip. all you need to do is reboot your phone. That would be awesome, then we wouldn't have to wait for VZW to re-tool it to be lame.

meh. it's the iphone argument at that point. if google is really interested in combating market segmentation, they're going to have to work with the carriers to make sure everyone gets the update.not necessarily. google could offer a site that downloads/initiates the package. we've all seen the update.zip. all you need to do is reboot your phone.
I suppose that might be possible, they could get the word out by sending everyone a text.
Still there would be people left behind. My wife has had her Droid for a month now and she hasn't even mounted the Droid. I don't think she knows how to do it even. I wouldn't be surprised to see a boatload of people who are in similar situations.
Even with Blackberry their updates go out OTA so they don't miss anybody.
