Android 2.2 - Froyo

We will definitely be getting 2.2 officially seeing that Google considers the Nexus and Droid dev phones. Apparently since the Dev seen is so strong on the Droid Google recognized it. This is why Google gives out nexus ones and droids to devs.

Not wanting to promote this as an argument, but what I meant by sunsetted is that Motorola is already moving on to their next models. And Motorola is a major player in developing the official OTA updates, so for the Droid, their motivation to develop more is diminishing with every day that passes.

I love Verizon for its service, but it's always the last to come out with the newest phones. They probably have a million Droids waiting to sell from their local stores, so that's why they're advertising so heavily on TV. But, that advertising doesn't make OTAs happen, that just helps keep the local stores open.

Product life is so short in this market; for Verizon, Motorola and Google to work together and produce another full OTA update for a product that is already nearly a year old would be extremely surprising.

Now Motorola has made statements that Flash will be available for the Droid, so I wouldn't be too surprised to see it. But that's all I'm ever expecting, and even Flash will be somewhat of a surprise if it comes out.

That doesn't mean other Droid sources won't move on to 2.2, in fact that is one of the beauties of the Droid, there are lots of sources for foundational technology. But another official full x.x version OTA update??? I'm sorry, I really doubt it.

All that said, I'm ready to eat my hat anytime the Big 3 prove me wrong. But I'm not getting the knife and fork out until I see the full x.x version OTA knock on my Droid's door.

Have you seen Android develop over the last 2 years? The Moto Droid is far from over. Its hardware is still capable of many updates.Example look at the G1 they gave that lacking hardware and internals 3 major updates including Cupcake. And theres still rumors of it getting 2.2.The Droid will receive at LEAST 2 more updates. The Motorola Droid still has at least 1 year left. realize that the upcoming updates are gonna be different and most apps with be updated in the Market.Leaving more space on your phone. :) dancedroid

I have the moto droid and I rememnber them being a delay with 2.1 ota rollout for the non rooted people. I now have the DInc and the wife replaced her eris the the moto droid. As much as I love the Dinc I know HTC has a bad habit to never releasing an update and instead just pumps out phones.

I really hope this is not the case with the DInc, If so it will be the last HTC device I ever buy unless they start selling them rooted and open. I think the Sense UI is nice and all but not nice enough to have them slack on updates to keep it running on the latest google OS.

As much as I dislike Apple for my own personal reasons, since they have a small hardware footprint to support they can pump out updates with no issues. I just wish Google would have thought better on this front. Their OS is awesome but their lack of a standardized update for all devices suck really really bad.

If MS can support a million hardware configurations and release their crap somewhat in a timely fashion and linux can do it in a timely fashion then why cant google put their power foot up big red and tmo brown eye along with the phone vendors to update their OS faster.

Wtf is a Dinc? I think you mean an Inc.

Well, most of Microsoft stuff to be honest is garbage. A lot of what they put out is fixes for problems that they made by releasing an OS that has or is vulnerable to all kinds of issues. So I think holding Microsoft as an example is kind of weak.

I'm kind of wondering what you mean about "timely fashion." What has been not timely about the updates? I mean we've had 2 updates in less then 6 months. Pretty darn good as far as I'm concerned. If we get another lets say we wait until July, that will be 3 updates in 8 months. Microsoft doesn't crank anything out like that for their OS.

Sports, and every TV show I watch has multiple ads. I wonder how many Droids there are out there now... 4 million?

It's the Flagship. The carriers have declined to sell the Nexus.

I'd love to see it really happen, but I'll believe it when I see it for the Droid...

After all the corporate heartache over the 2.1 OTA, combined with the fact that the Droid is already being sunsetted in favor of newer technology, plus the fact that Verizon is still trying to push 2.1 OTA to various 2.0.1 Droid users, I really doubt that the Droid will ever see another *full* upgrade through OTA. We may be lucky enough to get Flash, but beyond that the OTA crystal ball is dimming very quickly...

Just my humble opinion...

Yes, and it's got a dozen arguments in it.;)

I can't see how the Droid is being "sunsetted" when it's still Verizon's flagship phone. Watch some sports on television, this is where I notice the heaviest amount of advertising is done on the Droid. The Verizon phone most advertised is the Droid. Not the Incredible, or any other non Android phone.

Updates don't stop because a new phone comes out. Eventually it may not get support but I think we're good for another year or two on the Droid.

That of course is MY humble opinion.

I think it is funny how quickly everone forgets apple took 2 years to implement basic things like mms and exhange support.

And for MS, they took 3 versions and 4 yrs to get windows 95 right, then a couple service packs in a couple yrs to get XP right, and never got vista right.

All that, I would say Google is doing a good job. Yeah there could be some refinement with exchange support and even the default Gmail app, but updates have been as timely as apple and better than MS.

All I really want is native 5 screens and better email support. Flash would be cool too, but I am not holding my breath.
