Android 2.2 - Froyo

Makes me wonder why dev's wont just develop straight using the NDK instead of relying on the java VM. Then we wouldn't have to worry about things like JIT and get high performance native applications right off the bat.

I guess I'm a little prejudiced against java applications on a phone, I've hated them ever since dumb phones had java VM's on them and you could install "applets". These things performed like crap (opera mini comes to mind) and had chock full of restrictions on accessing the phone's hardware. Not to mention dealing with the signing crap and a ton load of different java API's. Oh yeah this was wayyyy before the Apple's app revolution, but I guess most people didn't know or care.

In the end it's easier working with java I guess?

thats the way THIS reads!

Hope its here!

Also, because Google releases something, I think that VZW has to pass it along. Might take days, weeks for this upgrade to be tailored for VZW...:icon_evil:

According to brighthand.com, Android 2.1 was released in January 2010. It took about 5 months for it to be available on OTA. Therefore, based on all conclusions, it would take a minimum of 5 months from the official release date of Android to get official installed on VWZ phones using OTA. Good luck.

Your math is slightly way off. It was first scheduled for the end of january. Pushed back to just 3 month not 5. And the 2.0.1 update was exactly on time.

Your logic at best is moronic.

What's most exciting (to me anyway) is that Froyo adds support for OpenGL ES 2.0 java bindings, which means better looking and preforming games! Right now if you want 2.0 support, you have to use the NDK and I've only seen a handful of games go that route.

Which games are using it?

I think ExZeus uses it, I remember reading on an interview somewhere about it. That's the reason why the game is buttery smooth, and looks quite amazing to boot.

There's also this fractal generator (technically not a game) and another weird game by the same people behind ExZeus.

Thanks. I might have to check that game out :)

Maybe. I never understood working with java in the first place. Its so sloooooow. Blackberries are the perfect example of how slow java can be.

According to chris dibona (google open source program manager), 2.2 won't be 450% faster. it might not even be twice as fast, but it will be faster than 2.1. it is impossible for a phone to be 450% faster, period.
we will definately see improvements all around though. im still excited.

-heard this on the cranky geeks podcast for 5/12/10.

the 450% figure is from a bunch of bloggers that don't know any better. JIT is obviously going to boost scores on a java based benchmarking app. Synthetic benchmarks don't mean squat don't mean much.
