adding a pic to a contact

How do I add a pic to a phone contact. I took a pic and added it to picsay. I try to export it to phone contact but it fails

Go to your gallery and do a long press on the photo and choose set as contact pic.

What I do is edit the contact and press the tiny little picture icon next to their name (it's on the left). It then asks me to choose an image or to take a picture.
