2 Questions. Rooting on a Mac and Phone running slow

Hey-

My phone is running really really slow. I have a lot of applications, is this why? I don't want to delete them! When I say a lot I mean around 15.

2nd Question.

Can you root with a Mac? I know nothing about rooting. Why should I do it?

Thank you :)

-Kristin :)

First question-15 apps is not a lot ;) Don't worry about that. However, if you have a lot of widgets running, that could definitely slow things down, as could improper use of a Task Killer if you are running one.

Second question-I used my Mac to root, but I did it in Boot Camp. do recall several threads about this that you can probably find with a search (HINT: Use the Google Search rather than the native search and you will have much better results).

Now, that is assuming that you are going to use the RSD method (which I would recommend). There are several apps out there, such as Easy Root, that say they will root for you with the press of a button. There have been a lot of threads about people having problems with this app. That could be due to a problem with the app or root process, or simply due to the fact that this encourages uninformed and unprepared rooting. We are all here to help, but PLEASE research and study the subject before diving in.

Good call using boot camp if you're going to do it the SPRecovery way, however not so good a call of easy rood. DMupater is a completed version of Easy Root and does a better job. I would strongly suggest DMupdater for your one step updater.

Sorry if I wan't clear there-I in no way endorse, encourage or support the use of Easy Root. It seems to me that this is nothing but trouble, and I've got some questions about the legitimacy of the code, and the responsibility of the dev.

I just noticed that I completely skipped this part of your question, sorry for that.

In a nutshell, rooting gives you and software access to parts of your phone that are otherwise off limits.

Rooting allows you do do things that you otherwise couldn't, and some of that is good, some is bad.

Pros
  • You have more customization options, such as flashing custom ROMs
  • You can do things like overclocking your phone for faster speed
  • You can install certain apps that otherwise couldn't, such as tethering apps

Cons
  • Rooting voids your phone's warranty
  • Custom ROMs and kernels can compromise stability
  • Troubleshooting may become more complicated and require a geater level of technical knowledge
  • You have access to parts of your phone that can make it easier to impare the operation and functionality of your phone.

This was just a short list of pros and cons, and there is no shortage of opinions about whether you should root or not. Personally, I am rooted. I enjoy tweaking the phone and I am comfortable with the technical aspects of doing that. Others, such as my wife, are not, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Hope that helps.
