2.2 isn't available via OTA for the Droid yet. Only way you are going to get 2.2 is to flash the leaked rom and that already includes root.

2.1 is not unrootable!!!! Installation of 2.2 can be done quite easily and when you are done you will be rooted.
You do not have to roll back to 2.0.1.
You need to download and install SPRecovery and RSD lite. Once you have that you can flash SPRecovery and then install the latest version of Froyo. No rooting is required. 2.2 will actually root your phone when you install it.

Worked everytime for me with 2.2....not so with 2.1 and before.
I see you asked for an install guide for 2.2.....are you currently rooted?
