Android OS 2.2 Upgrades for Motorola Droid X, HTC Droid Incredible Apparently Delayed

Recent unconfirmed reports indicated that the Motorola Droid X and the HTC Droid Incredible would get simultaneous upgrades to the latest version of Google's Android OS a week from today, but new reports say these releases have been bumped back.

Both these models debuted running Android OS 2.1, but Google introduced a new version in June and upgrades to current smartphones are starting to reach consumers.
At one point, it was thought all three of Verizon's high-end Droid models -- the original Motorola Droid, the Droid X, and Droid Incredible -- would get system software upgrades next Sunday but not any more.
The original Droid is going to get Android OS 2.2 starting this week, according to an official statement from Motorola. However, problems have supposedly emerged with the upgrades for its sister models.
According to Motorola, the Droid X is going to receive its upgrade to the latest version of Google's operating system "in late summer". HTC has promised that a similar upgrade for the Droid Incredible is in the works, but the company has made no promises about timing.
New in Android OS 2.2
The latest version of Google's mobile operating system is required for devices to run Adobe Flash Player 10.1, which allows the web browser to fully make use of websites that use Flash for navigation, games, and showing video.
Android OS 2.2 is the first to include tethering and portable hotspot software, allowing it to share its 3G Internet connection with other devices over a Wi-Fi connection. The Droid X already has the feature, for which Verizon charges $20 a month.
This new version also contains a number of other small enhancements, but none of the improvements significantly change the platform.
About the Droid Series
The members of Verizon's Droid series of smartphones very quite a bit in their specifications, but they are all high-end devices running the Android OS.
The first Droid, made by Motorola, was released late last year. This was followed a few months later by the HTC Droid Incredible, while the Motorola Droid X was introduced a few weeks ago.
Verizon is expected to launch the Motorola Droid 2 next month. This will supposedly be the first in the series to debut with Android OS 2.2.
