2.2.1 Too Slow for Milestone

Hello,
I am using the Motorola Milestone under Android Version 2.2.1 and it is very choppy. I am wondering what version is optimal for the Milestone. Should I upgrade or downgrade to an older version? Also, I need to know this because I plan to root the phone so I should hammer out what the best version is before I do this. Thank you for reading.
