Why does the GPS/Navigation system sometimes not work on my Pantech Breakout

Sometimes the GPS/navigation will inexplicably not work (usually when I am lost and need it most) Occasionally restarting the phone helps, but recently, it worked perfect at home, but I was trying to find an all night pharmacy and drove over a 20 mile radius trying to get the "places" and GPS to work, and it would never pick up. The second I got home it worked again. Have had this issue before, I travel extensively with my job. Was in Alabama and it happened and I stopped in and the girl showed me some option to do under settings and mobile newtorks but I cant for the life of me remember. REALLY tired of the many many problems with this phone...

Usually that comes up if you toggle gps on and off a lot instead of leaving it on. Could also simply be the phone.
