Why can't I connect via USB?

When i plug into my laptop, it just gives me an error message saying the drive malfunctioned. The Phone never even acts like I just plugged it in.

One thing to check, if your SD Card isn't mounting when connected it:
On the phone, when connected, you should get a notification stating that USB is connected. If you tap on it, it should give you options.. I believe one of them is "USB Mass Storage". Select this one, and hit OK.

When done on the SD Card, you may want to return it to PC Mode...
See if that helps. GL!

Well, I just got my Droid X today and it's doing the same thing. After a couple hours on the phone with Motorola support, they told me to return the phone to Verizon for a replacement.

Let me know if you figure anything out.

well, mine connects NP to my linux laptop in all 4 modes. (When set to PC Mode, it doesn't show any connection on the laptop, but it does show connected via phone.

A couple questions to help diagnose:
-- Does the phone show that it's charging when connected to the linux box at least?'
-- dmesg, or /var/log/messages should show something when you connect the phone, any errors?

It doesn't show connected on a linux box (just to be sure)?
Before returning it, have you tried connecting it to another machine, perhaps windoze box just to make sure it's the phone, and not something screwy with connectivity/security/? on the computer?

Also, does the phone show up as charging? If not, then there's a good chance it's the cable.. (?).

For Linux, it should show SOMETHING in dmesg or messages. For both Linux AND Windows, it should pop up something on the phone when connected via USB.

More info we can get on this, more help you'll probably get as well. :)

No, the phone does not show that it's charging either. basically acts like it's not even plugged in, no indications whatsoever.
the computer knows that something has been plugged into the usb port but it says that an error has occurred.
I use Windows btw.
I thought it might be the cable, but it works fine for wall charging when using the adapter.

Well, when I try to connect to my Windows 7 machine, the phone says connecting usb mass storage, then the computer automatically opens a browser window to V CAST Media Manager Free Software Download. Doesn't do many any good anyway since it only works for 32 bit OS, and I'm running 64 bit. So, close the browser and get back to the phone . . . The top shows USB connection, but the PC doesn't show memory available on the phone. The phone then acts like there isn't a SD card in it.

Ok.. in your case, on your phone, if you slide the notification bar down, it should list "USB Connection". TAP on it, and it'll give you the option to select "USB Mass Storage" mode. Then from Explorer, it should show the files on your SD card. GL!

I'm sorry, confused this one with another thread! :( bleh Other thread, someone having EXACT same problem only, on Linux. lol

If it's Windows, first thing I'd try is to load the drivers:
USB and PC Charging Drivers - Motorola, Inc. USA

hope this helps.

^^^ This...it escapes me as to how people sometimes forget that a cell phone plugged into a computer just might not be recognized without possibly using the actual Device Drivers from the manufacturer....

OP...first thing to try is the above...download the driver, install it, then try attaching your phone via the USB cable. If it doesnt work the first time, reboot the PC and try again...if still no joy, move onto a new USB cable. If still no joy, then I would be at the nearest Verizon store with original USB cable in hand and have them see if it works for them...and if not, have them replace either cable or phone or both.

Hope you get it figured out...post back and let us know...

you'll have to forgive me, I"m not really a computer/tech guy, I'm a car guy, so to me, if something plugs in, it should work.
I tried downloading the drivers, but they arrived in a zip file, and I don't know what to do with that. I tried opening each one individually but they were mostly .pdf files and notepad gobbledygook.
Can someone tell me how to get what I need out of the zip files?
Thanks.

Here's a good alternative: http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-applications/86675-wifi-file-explorer-pro.html

This app will allow you to connect to your SD card on your PC by using WiFi. You have to have WiFi, it won't work with 3G but you will be able to do everything you can with out having to hook you Droid up by USB. Add pictures, music, remove stuff.

It will provide you with a web address to type into your browser to access your SD card.

Ya, don't sweat it... I didn't know either when I first hooked it up.
It escapes me how some people actually didn't assume that it'd "just work" like most tech toys these days. ;) hehe

Sounds like you downloaded the "charging drivers" or whatever. I'll make this 100x easier for ya:
On the same page:
USB and PC Charging Drivers - Motorola USA

About 1/2 way down the page, there's a link that says "Motorola 4.7.1 Driver with MotoConnect.
Once you've downloaded it, unzip it, and run the .msi installer inside. It'll do everything for you.

Funny.. but Motorola makes the links at the bottom (the hard confusing way) easily descernable as links.. but the link that 99% of users want look like in-line text. :S

Hope this helps!
