I use Ebuddy for when I want all my instant/social networking messengers online. It has a battery save option that states it may delay messages by as much as 15 minutes. I can't really comment on battery drain as it isn't highly noticeable to me...

NO reason to use any AIM app really. Just go into AIM on your computer, go under settings/mobile, and have it push it to your phone when you log off your computer.

I don't want to always be online.

I've only used Meebo, but I can tell you that it really drains your battery (with intense chatting).

I use Hi AIM and it seems to work fine and not kill my battery.
