What is the android browser based off of?

I was curious as to what browser the google android browser was based off of when developed. chrome? firefox?

just webkit? is it developed by google? if not is google planning on releasing a chrome browser on android. what about mozilla, any firefox mobile anytime soon?

It's a WebKit browser but uses Chrome's V8 JavaScript engine (as of 2.2)

Webkit as seen on iphone, I think. It's open source.

Firefox mobile is in development.

Only browser that uses it's own rendering engine is opera mini, I think.
