Using headphones to take pictures /selfies

I thought I had read somewhere that you can use a set of headphones attached to the phone as a sort of make-shift remote shutter release cable to take pictures without actually touching the screen. I've searched but now can't find anything on it. If course I would ideally use it with something like a Joby Gorillapod for smartphone - like this :

Does anyone know of this? I thought it sounded like a great idea.

Well for the selfie you coud use the motovoice command "Take a selfie" You might need a camera app that supports taking pics with the volume button. I think camera zoom fx had that setting. In settings/all settings -custom buttons. You can set the volume button to take a picture. I don't know if that will work with the headphone or just the phone volume. There is a free version in the play store, if you wanted to give it a try.
