Understanding ADB and SDCard

In order to get ADB to work, I have to have the phone in Windows Sync mode.

But then, the SDCard only shows a couple of media directories, not everything on the card.

If I switch to USB mode to access the SDCard, then ADB does not work.

Is there a way to get everything working together or do I need to switch back & forth?

why do u need the SD card to work when using adb?

It would just be nice to plug my phone into my PC and be able to access it in whatever way I need to without having to unplug it, change settings, and plug it back in again.
