1) QWERTY keyboard.
The #1 reason I stood by my Voyager for so long. Touch screen keyboards have always struck me as a giant step backwards in terms of efficiency/functionality.
Ironically, the Droid QWERTY is so disappointingly, uselessly, terrible (I still can't hit the "u" key without hitting 3 other keys...) that I almost always use the touchscreen keyboard anyway ; ;
2)Google. The only brand strong enough to compete with the coolsauce Apple has doused the world with. And since I'm Verizon (always have been and prob always will be), I was thrilled to have an Android option.
3) Apps. I saw a story on CNN about apps like Layar and Goggles last summer and, half paying attention, I didn't realize they were talking about current technology. I thought it was a demo of what was coming in the future. Regardless, the story stuck with me, and when I was up for a new phone, I would even discuss it with people ("one day you will be able to hold up your phone and your camera& gps will show you info about your surroundings through your camera! Isn't that crazy?!). I wanted an Android phone because eventually there will be these mind-blowing apps.
Fast forward to last week when I got my phone. Hung up on how bad the keyboard was, I was very disappointed at first, and had decided I would exchange the Droid for something cheaper. Then I started putzing with apps. Downloaded Layar loaded up the Wiki layer, held up my phone and to my astonishment, it was just like I saw in that news story. I live on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, so I'm surrounded by landmarks. It was a very dramatic introduction to what my phone could do.
And I haven't put my Droid down since. I rue the day that it stops blowing my mind on a daily basis. Rue it!
