A friend with Galaxy Alpha had 50000 yesterday.
I felt embarassed with my HTC M8 having 47000 as max.

I wouldn't be embarrassed.....side by side I'm sure your M8 was just as snappy. Don't read too much into benchmarks. [emoji3]

How exactly do these numbers work? Are they mhz or something?

It's an overall score. A battery of tests are run and you get scored in each test and the total is that number.

I was curious to see if I'd get 50, too.
I got 49708.

I was surprised it was a slight tiny bit higher then the Note 4. I thought the Note would be a bit stronger.

I agree. My personal experience with my Nexus 6 also tells me it's a beast as well . They have the same basic internals, obviously.

I'd say it is probably due to screen size.
