This is what happens when you break your droid 2 (with insurance)

Three days into having the Droid 2, I dropped it onto the concrete from 5 feet... of course, face down, and it cracked the glass on the front.

I filed a claim through Asurion (paying $6 a month for this) and did it through phoneclaim.com... paid the $89 deductible and the phone arrive next day (free shipping).

I analyzed the replacement phone to death, until finally arriving at a "hmmmm..."

Everything was exactly the same (weight, battery, memory, processor, camera, graphic chip, etc)... except the LCD was slightly yellowed instead of the brilliant white. :icon_evil:

It was as if the LCD was a year old while the rest of the phone was new... shady. So, I went on ifixit and followed the disassembly instructions to a T, and transplanted one LCD for the other. A very careful 2 hours later, success!

I'll post pics later.

Just getting this out there for everyone wondering what you might get with a refurb for this new phone.

Um where did you get another screen?

The glass touch screen on the broken phone was cracked, however the LCD underneath was still good.

So, I used the LCD from the broken phone and put it into the new one (not the screen).

Pic from ifixit (the LCD is the middle):

And if they catch that your old phone has been disassembled when they get it back, you'll be responsible for the entire cost of the new phone because you have now voided the warranty.

At no point did I encounter a sticker that said "Void warranty if removed."

Is this buried in the contract somewhere?

i would have just called assurion and told them to send you another one... you have a week i think to report an issue with a device they send you and then they will send you a replacement for free... could have saved you the time and risk.

Asurion replaces broken phones no questions asked, just don't tell them if it was intentional. The warrenty plays no part unless you are replacing through verizon or motorola

So, I thought this sounded like a good idea and went ahead and did it. I called them up and said I wasn't satisfied, and they sent out another phone. When it arrived, I checked the screen, and behold... yellow again. Sent it back. Kept my transplanted phone. The end.

Moral of the story, if you replace a Droid 2 under asurion, they give you a new Droid 2 with an old yellowed LCD. I'm sure they do similar things for other smartphones like HTC's, Blackberry's, etc. You can always swap it out if ur LCD's still good though! dancedroid
