This thread may help you out...There are at least 2 apps that will read PDF files suggested in it. Both are paid, but there may be others suggested later on. I just wanted to make sure it had some ideas for you...

Beamreader is only $1.99

[You have to have a PDF reader on your phone. You might try searching PDF or PDF email reader or something like that in the market to see if there are others.]

Is it only with a PDF?

If it is a PDF that is either a) auto generated by a travel agency or some other service, or b) contained within the email or attachment by << >> it WILL NOT OPEN or c) sometimes other "random" conditions... I have tried EVERY SINGLE PDF attachment viewer, and anyone that tells you to buy something is not going to solve your problem (if what I described is the problem....it WILL fix other problems).

The ONLY solution is to save the file and re-email it to yourself from your computer, then it will work.

I know this because I travel for the government and we use SATO travel all across DoD. Every email with your itinerary from them is auto generated and the attachment looks like <<ABC123.PDF>> and none of them open, while EVERY SINGLE other PDF opens without a hitch.

I have Documents to Go full but the problem is not the program. There is no solution as of right now, and it's hard to replicate because people without those specific types of emails will not be able to replicate the problem and will think they have solved the problem for you when they can open random PDF files with X program.

Here is my thread on the subject:

Matt3w,
I am experiencing a similar problem. I check my work email through our mail exchange but I can't read any of the attachments. No pdfs, no Word docs or Excel. What do I need to fix this?

You can't, directly...I have done about 2 hours of searching via Google and various Android forums. It's hard for people to replicate so there aren't many answers.

So far, the only thing I have done (I only have the problem with PDF files so far, so perhaps we have different issues....have you tried Docs2Go?) to solve my PDF issue is to save the file, and re-email it to myself. That removes whatever is causing it to not be opened.

Try that and see if it works. If it does, then we probably have the same issue. If not, then your issue is something else. Generally, this seems to be more of a PDF issue than MS Office issue from what I have found through my searching.

Thanks for the insight Matt! I use my phone alley for personal use, and rarely, if EVER receive pdfs. I simply typed PDF email into the search of this forum, and provided the results the op would've got doing the same. Glad to know those apps won't help. (Glad for the knowledge, not that you have trouble!)

Doesn't mean I have all the answers, though, and I haven't researched any new solutions for about two weeks.

I'm hoping that I am wrong and someone has fixed this issue.

Here are some links I found via Google:

I also didn't try using K9 to see if it was a software issue or something with the actual email retrieval. Try K9 and see if you can open the same documents.

I downloaded Docs2Go the free version and tried to open my Word attachment again. NO GO! The only way, I can open my attachments is to read my gmail on my computer which really defeats the whole purpose. Oh, well. Good to know so I don't have to pull any more hair out over this.

Thanks for your input.

To the OP as much as the 'Droid does' there are many things that it doesn't do... if you are using the Droid primarily as a 'business' phone than you may actually be better served with another device. Android is still young and I have no doubt Google will get things correct in time but as it stands for strict business users (particularly those that need full functional email, calendars and document handling) the Droid just is NOT able to cut it. So be aware of that and weight the pros and cons for yourself.

With that said I'm, personally not too disappointed that Google has yet to focus on these issues. The percentage of people that REALLY NEED these business features is rather small and many, if not MOST of them are limited by their IT departments and companies as to what phones they can use. It will come, eventually...

Do me a favor...try these two "solutions" to isolate the problem:

1. Download K-9 email application and see if you can open it there. If so, it's an issue with the stock email application.

2. Open the email in question on your home computer...save it to the desktop...then re-send the email to yourself, then try to try open it up in the native email program. I know that you shouldn't have to do that, but that lets you know if your issue is the same as I have been describing. If you can resave the file and resend to yourself and it opens, then you know you have this elusive Android issue.

I've posted on this issue before. On the internet is a program called Crutch lite. Supposedly it will open ANY document. I say that because even though I have it installed in my phone I've never actually used it. I usually don't get file attachments.

So if you want, there's another alternative to look at. If you google Crutch you should be able to find it.

Crutch is designed to open unknown files...this isn't the issue. This is either an issue with the stock POP/IMAP email application or the way the message is retrieved. Because I can bet that if she does what I said in step 2 of post #12 she will be able to open it.

In the thread I posted the link to earlier, someone said they were having the same issue with the native email app AND k9, but it couldn't hurt to try since there are obviously different issues going on with attachments!
