The Internet is for… XXX top level domain gets initial approval

by Nicholas Deleon on June 25, 2010

Now the talking heads on cable news will have something else to complain about. ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, has given initial approval for a .xxx top-level domain. Should the initial approval become final approval, you’ll be able to register URLs like nakedchicksdoingstuff.xxx.

It’s a pretty big deal for a few reasons. For one it’s makes filtering out unwanted content approximately 80 billion times easier—just block access to all .xxx domains and call it a day. You’d think that would have made to creation of the TLD popular with the anti-porn brigade, but it didn’t. Nope, their arguments went something along the lines of, “The creation of a .xxx TLD will encourage the proliferation of Internet pornography. Or, similarly, that it will create a sort of red light district online.

Needless to say, porn has done a pretty amazing job of spreading across the Internet even without a dedicated TLD. Remember: fully one-third of all Internet downloads are for pornography.

ICANN, for its part, wasn’t sure it wanted to create a .xxx TLD for fear that it would be forced into a sort of Internet policing role. That’s not ICANN’s job, and it couldn’t be an “Internet cop” even if it wanted to.

All of this started way back in 2005 when the first proposals were being put forth to create the TLD. Complaints and ICANN’s own fear (see above) delayed the proceedings.

I have so many URLs that I’d love to buy then turn around and sell to, I don’t know, Larry Flint or whatever.

How much is nudegirlsplayingnintendowii.xxx worth?

Well if the .xxx domain gets final approval Steve Jobs will be removing Safari as well as Opera from all iDevices. As you know Android is for porn and now with the .xxx domain the internet will be for porn too.

The funny thing about Jobs' porn argument is that on the iPhone, there is an app (Covenant Eyes) that can be used for accountability on the browser... i.e., you have someone that gets an email listing everywhere you've visited. It can only really work if you restrict safari and someone else knows the password. But all it is, essentially, is a replacement browser. Nothing greater could be developed b/c of Apples closed system. It can't track risque` apps you download that Apple doesn't consider porn, technically, or anything but what's done inside that browser.

However, due to Android's open system, an app has been developed that tracks everything... browser visits, searches, app downloads, etc... runs using less processor than the keyboard, and again, emails it all to whomever you choose.

So, yes, you can get to porn apps easier on Android, but you can (if you so choose) take measures to restrict that more thoroughly on Android as well.

This is a bit of a tangent from the OP, but since it was about .xxx and Steve Jobs' porn thing was mentioned, I thought I'd bring it up.

DS, I totally see the irony of this given our conversation yesterday, especially when I brought up the moral/ethical thing... I literally just discovered this this morning. ;)

Well seeing as so far they won't be forcing the companies to take a .xxx name they've said it will be pointless. All it will do is allow people to get onto sites that they shouldn't be. Hopefully they will make it, that if the company purchases a .xxx domain name that they have to switch from the .com or .net or whatever within like a 6 month time frame.

What shocks me more is that a conversation with me was actually beneficial. Most conversations with my wife usually end up with some colorful colloquialisms and a door slam. :)
