One of today's leading security expert has warned that hackers are planning one of the most advanced cyber attacks ever in order to “take the Internet down".

Bruce Schneier has warned that hackers have stepped up cyber attacks against the key organisations whose job it is to keep the internet online.

These sophisticated attackers are said to be part of an ongoing campaign whose goal is to cause widespread disruption to the internet and major online services.

Schneier is now warning organisations of the need to step up their security protection in order to ensure the world has access to the internet and important online services remain intact.

Schneier says the attacks are “precisely calibrated” and are believed to have originated from Russia or China, with hackers carrying out a series of sustained DDoS attacks to knock key websites and infrastructure offline.

The DDoS attacks carried out by the hackers are “significantly larger” and longer lasting than anything seen before.

The hackers are also probing these systems trying to find out exactly what kind of security is in place with different attacks targeting different systems.

“Someone is extensively testing the core defensive capabilities of the companies that provide critical internet services”, said Schneier.

If that wasn’t bad enough, Schneier says that “nothing” can be done to stop the attacks.

“This is happening. And people should know”, Schneier added.

Anyone worried? What are your thoughts?

Whoa! Worried? Yes, that's scary! Our world now revolves around the internet. No access to the internet would mean I have to physically pay all my bills by mail, actually go to my bank for my transactions, delay my direct deposit paycheck, lose access to all my paperless statements, lose access to my alternate news sources, and DF!

I don't think so @TisMyDroid.

No internet, no bills can be paid as banks and companies can not operate..

Yea they can. Bank transactions aren't on the open Internet that we use.

And they big banks can detect and get around a DDoS attack in a few minutes. If the root servers are hacked that's another story. I'd expect their engineers to know how to thwart an attack as well.

Does it suprise me? No

Does is scare me? Yes

We all know that anything, with time can be compromised. And with enough time and knowledge, extensive and long lasting damage can be done.

If a high school kid can hack into a major network, I assume Russia and China can bring down the internet.

The only thing that makes me uneasy is "panic".

Without facebook, (omg, the sky is falling.) And everything else, and yes I listed facebook first. You're gonna have a bunch of people running around like a chicken with it's head cut off.

We are crippling ourselves by having become so reliant on technology. But, it is too late now.

I am actually suprised it has taken so long for someone to orchestrate something such as this.

Without Facebook! What about DroidForums? Okay, being silly!

Actually, one of my first thoughts was the world as we know it would come to a crushing halt but is that such a bad thing. Taking it to the extreme, it would force us all to go back to a simpler time where people had to genuinely connect with one another.

My very well-to-do Aunt went to Costa Rica for a three week vacation. The only reason I mention that she had the means to have every available convenience this world has to offer is because her thoughts and plans after visiting Costa Rica was enlightening, to say the least.

Of all the places around the world she visited, she wanted to retire to Costa Rica. Why? She told me that, despite they have very little and live by what the earth offers, they were the happiest people and it was the happiest place on earth. Pointing to all her possessions and our current technology she questioned how necessary it all was to have a fulfilling life.

Maybe it really is the direction this world needs to go.

Well now, what a great point! I never thought of it that way.

Though I refuse to resort to shoving money into my walls instead of using a bank. [emoji14]

TBH I wouldn't mind FB being shut down... I recently re-joined a few weeks ago (mainly to promote my business), but it's full of the exact same drama I dealt with 3 years ago after I caved to the peer pressure from friends and family to join. That lasted all of two weeks before I deleted my acct. (We'll see how long it lasts this time) LOL [emoji23] [emoji38]
On the plus side, it has been nice reconnecting with my aunts & cousins I haven't heard from in decades.
As for the whole internet, I don't see it being down for long if it did happen.....there are too many hackers out there that could restore it just as quickly.
We do need better security measures implemented though, so this would be a huge wake up call.
