Tab 10.1 GT-P7500

Guys I have the above, for a few years now, with no problems, last year it locked out @ the Samsung logo, so after trying various resets hard &soft, it finished up gettin repaired @ a tablet repair store.
When it returned it was ok for a while but then became very laggy, & was using lots of resources, apps running in the background etc...so a clean up works for a while but most samsung apps continue to restart, just after stopping them?
I am thinking of rooting it, & going for an Android 4.4? Currently it's 4.0.4 ICS! there appears to be no more updates for this device?
Should I consider this, with the option of bricking it? Any advice really?

If you are not in the market for a new tab, rooting may be a good option for you.
