Syncing icon remains active after taking X off charging dock

I've noticed every so often that when I take my phone off the charging dock (purchased through verizon), the sync notification (arrows in a circle icon) remains in the notification bar and I have to turn the phone off and back on again for it to be gone. This is not consistent but I don't remember seeing the icon remaining after detaching from the dock. Suggestions?

I have a Droid so my experience may be different but can use tap the clear button in the notification bar?

That was my first thought and it doesn't clear the icon. When I pull my notification bar down to view what's in it, the sync feature doesn't actually show up as an active notification. It's just the icon in the bar.
