SYM on the spacebar

What does SYM stand for on the spacebar? I pressed it, nothing. I hold it down, nothing. What is the purpose for this on the spacebar key?? :icon_ banana:

did you try "alt" then SYM? it should pull up an on screen of additional symbols to choose from...
