Sound timing off on movies

Everytime I watch a movie on my X the sound timing is off either from the start or it slowly loses sync as the movie goes along. I assume it has to do with the manner in which the movie was converted but its happened with movies converted using two separate programs as well as movie downloaded straight from the net.
Has this happened to anyone else?
