Apparently, Sony is wanting to move beyond their partnership with Ericsson, and more fully commit to mobile phones. A new report indicates that Sony is in talks to purchase the mobile division of Ericsson outright. This would more than likely eliminate the Ericsson branding on their phones eventually, so we would simply see Sony Android phones.
According to analyst estimates, the Sony Ericsson division is worth between $1.3-$1.7 Billion, so Sony will have to fork over a hefty sum to have their own mobile phone company. All reports indicate that it looks like it might be a done deal pretty soon. Still, who knows what could happen in the mean time, or how long the negotiations will last. We will keep you apprised as we find out more details. Sound off in the forums if you think Sony has a shot of making an impact in the mobile phone world.
