sms/email alert tone

Is it possible to put different alert tones for each? Or does it have to be the same alert tone for both?am I just blind and not seeing the option?

It is not in the general settings... you have to go into the application (i.e. Gmail) and then go to the options in the application. From there you can give it a distinct ringtone/notification.
