I understand you can get smoked glass themes by rooting your droid...other then that, is that it? Is it possible to download something close that is stable to use with out your phone being rooted?

The app I've seen that lets you do the most customization on a stock phone would be Sweeter Home. The time you won't spend wondering if you bricked your phone you can spend customizing the heck out of the phone. There are themes you can use that others have made too.
