Hello all,

To cut a long story short, my Samsung J7 pro died over a period of a couple of weeks. I got a new android phone and inserted my SIM card into it. During setup I follow the instructions and try to log in to my google account to restore most of my data. However, when I try to log in, google sends an OTP to my phone number (which I cannot yet access on the new phone since it has not been setup!). Moreover, I cannot setup the new phone while the SIM card is in a different temporary phone since the SIM card needs to be inserted into the new phone to set it up. I'm sure there must be a simple solution to this and I'm being rather stupid here, but could someone please drop a hint on how to resolve this problem?

OK, to answer my own question, just setup the new phone without signing in. Sign in after the setup and then sync. Stupid of me.

Welcome to the forum. Simply put the sim card into your new phone and set it up. I've always setup new phones with wifi with the sim card in the old phone with no issues!

Thank you. Retrieved all my contacts from the google backup. However whatsapp is a different story: it knew my google backup account and appeared to sync, but then all messages were replaced by "waiting for this message. This may take a while". I waited for some time but there was no change to this and there were no old messages showing. I then uninstalled whatsapp and reinstalled. This time it showed my google backup account but with the message "No backup" underneath it. After proceeding with the "no backup", it reverted to a state that was a few months old with all contacts just showing "you were added". No messages at all. So it appears that I am screwed w.r.t whatsapp. Any ideas would be appreciated.

BTW I know for sure that the whatsapp backup on my old phone was turned on. So there should be a backup on my account that is less than a couple of weeks old.

I also use whatsapp on my desktop, so until just before I setup the new phone I had all the whatsapp messages on my desktop (which was what I was using for the 10 days or so when I was using the temporary phone). Now these desktop messages are also gone since I got signed out when I setup the new phone. Really sucks.
