Rooting will void your warranty but you can unroot if you ever need to take your phone to Verizon. The only con to rooting is you could brick your droid if you don't know what you're doing

I don't know much about Droid Xs but z4root cannot brick your phone. There is a possibility of bricking your phone if you start flashing roms but you will be fine if you know what you're doing. You can flash a sbf via RSDlite to unbrick your droid if you mange to. I don't quite understand your last question

The benifits of are
-wireless tethering
-custom roms
-overclocking
I'd say the advantages heavily out weigh the disadvantages considering theres one to begin with that being your warranty being voided and you always unroot before go to the verizon store.
