The SMUpdater will "automatically" root your phone and install one of the SholesMod versions. "Automatically" means it still needs your input to decide what apps to install.
Do some poking around, there are literally hundreds of threads about this.
Oh yeah man you'll love it! It just came out and I'm surprised you haven't noticed the bajillion threads on this...lol
But what it does is, root your phone, install a custom recovery that allows you to backup your phones system and restore past backups you've made, and finally, install a brand new ROM from the Sholes team at sholes.info
This ROM allows you to overclock your phone to achieve awesome speed and responsiveness, install the smoke glass theme, install apps from the Nexus One as well as the Milestone in Europe, and have multitouch within your browser and picture gallery
If i'm going to do this should I go ahead and do it or wait until sholes has the 2.1 update? I'm guessing that sholes will have a 2.1 update or am i wrong. If they do have the 2.1 update does anyone know when that might happen? I'm really wanting to root my phone.
JMO.. but don't wait. I'm am guessing the 2.1 update isn't going to be that impressive. At least, not as impressive as the Sholes mod makes your phone. Plus, whatever goodies that may come out in 2.1, will be quickly made available thru an update by Sholes (these guys work fast). If you do go the Sholes route, get the 2.0.2 version over the newer one.. the newer one makes Google Maps not work. There is a fix, but its over my head. I'm sure whatever the next update is will fix it anyways.

Install 2.0.3. When you get to the part about selecting what to install/remove...just don't install the Maps part. Then when you're done with the ROM installation, go into the marketplace and update Google Maps to 3.4.0 (just like Sholes 2.0.3 was going to do for you but for some reason has been to known to botch it).
