SD Card can't boot to recovery

I've got a Motorola Droid 1. I was having problems booting to recovery using clockwork or sprrecovery and in any ROM/Kernal combination that I tried. Didn't matter which one I used, it would boot to the recovery screen for about 5 seconds, then reboot the phone. I thought I had a problem with the 16GB card that came with the phone, so i switched it out with a 2GB i had with a previous phone. Slipped it in - did nothing else, and have had no problems for about 3 weeks.

Thinking the original card was bad, went to Verizon and bought a 32GB card. Put it in the phone. Same reboot issues as before. Thought it might be a format issue, so reformated. Same problems.

Any ideas what is happening and how to fix?
